ServicesRetirement Income Planning
Retirement Income Planning in San Ramon
We help you turn savings and life insurance into income you can count on after work ends. We compare annuities and cash value options side by side, explain every payout and surrender rule in plain terms, and put the numbers in writing before you decide anything.

What retirement income planning covers
Most people reach retirement with money in several places. There may be a 401(k) or IRA, a pension, Social Security, and sometimes a whole life or universal life policy with cash value. Retirement income planning decides how those pieces pay you each month, and what happens to them if you or your spouse dies.
Our part is the insurance side. We look at annuities that can turn a lump sum into steady income, at how cash value in a policy you already own can be used, and at the coverage your beneficiaries will rely on. We are not tax preparers, so when a choice has tax consequences we say so and suggest you review it with your tax professional.
The best time to call is usually five to ten years before you stop working. Even after retirement starts, it is worth reviewing what you have.
What we look at with you
Every income source on one page
We list each source you expect to draw on, with start dates and monthly amounts. Seeing them together often shows the gap between what comes in and what you spend.
Annuity comparisons
Fixed, fixed indexed and income annuities behave differently. We show how each pays, how long the surrender period runs, and what fees or rider charges apply, so you compare them on the same terms.
A review of policies you own
If you have whole life or universal life, we read the contract and the latest annual statement. We explain what withdrawals or policy loans would do to the cash value and to the coverage left for your beneficiaries.
Income for a surviving spouse
We look at what continues if one of you dies first, including pension survivor elections and joint-life annuity payouts.
Beneficiary and claim paperwork
We confirm beneficiary designations match your wishes and note where the documents your family will need are kept. We walk through the claim steps in advance, without promising timelines that the insurer controls.

When an income plan makes sense now
- Your last working year is in sight
- You have a target date in mind but no clear picture of the monthly figure that follows it. Closing that gap is where planning does its best work.
- Your savings sit in one account
- A large 401(k) with no drawdown plan leaves you exposed if markets drop in the first years of retirement.
- A pension election is coming
- Single-life and joint-and-survivor choices are usually permanent. Compare them against life insurance or annuity options before you sign.
- You own a policy you don't fully understand
- Older whole life and universal life policies can carry cash value, outstanding loans or rising internal costs. Each of those matters once you start drawing income.
- You worry about outliving your money
- If longevity runs in your family, lifetime income from an annuity, backed by the insurer's claims-paying ability, may be worth a look. It is not right for everyone, and we will tell you when it is not right for you.
How planning with us runs
- 1
A first phone conversation
We ask when you plan to stop working, what you have saved and what you spend each month. No documents are needed yet, and there is no obligation.
- 2
Gathering statements
We ask for recent account statements, pension estimates, your Social Security statement and any life insurance contracts. We tell you exactly which pages we need so you are not sending stacks of paper.
- 3
A written comparison
We lay out two or three income options side by side, with payout amounts, surrender schedules, fees and what passes to beneficiaries. Every figure comes from insurer illustrations, and we explain them line by line.
- 4
Your decision, on your schedule
Take the time you need. If you choose a product, we handle the application and explain the free-look period, the window after delivery when you can still cancel.
- 5
Yearly check-ins
We revisit the plan as rates, health and goals change, and update beneficiaries when your life does.
What affects the cost of your income plan
Talking with us and receiving the written comparison carries no charge. Your real expense comes from whichever annuity or policy you select, and the insurer sets those charges. The insurer pays us a commission when a policy or annuity is placed, and we walk you through that arrangement before any application.
- Your age when you buy
- Annuity payouts rise with age because the insurer expects to pay for fewer years. Life insurance costs move the other way.
- Single or joint income
- Income that continues for a surviving spouse pays less each month than income based on one life.
- Riders you add
- Lifetime income riders, inflation adjustments and enhanced death benefits carry annual charges. We show what each one costs and what it actually buys.
- Length of the surrender period
- Longer surrender periods often come with better rates but tie up your money. Withdrawals above the free amount in those years trigger charges.
- Rates at the time of purchase
- Fixed and income annuity rates follow the broader rate environment, so the same deposit can pay differently a year apart.
Retirement income questions
- Do I have to buy an annuity?
- No. Many people do well with savings, Social Security and a pension alone. We show where an annuity might fill a gap and where it would not, and the choice stays with you.
- Can my life insurance policy provide retirement income?
- Often, if it is whole life or universal life with cash value. Withdrawals and policy loans reduce the cash value and can reduce what your beneficiaries receive, and a policy can lapse if loans grow too large. We run the numbers with the insurer's own illustration before you touch it.
- Are you a financial advisor?
- We are a life insurance agency, and our work centers on annuities and life insurance. We do not manage investment portfolios or prepare taxes. When a decision touches those areas, we encourage you to bring in your tax or investment professional.
- What will my family need to do after I die?
- We show your beneficiaries ahead of time what an insurer usually asks for: the policy or contract number, an official copy of the death certificate and the claim form. When the time comes, we can help them gather documents and explain each step. Payment timing is set by the insurer, so we will not promise a date.
- Do you work with clients outside San Ramon?
- Yes. Clients in Dublin, Danville, Pleasanton and Alamo plan with us as well. Nearly everything we do happens over the phone, so living a few towns away makes little difference to how we work together.
